England lose nerve-shredding shootout 3-2 to Italy in Euro 2020 final

On a night fraught with tension Italy clinched its first major title for 15 years with a penalty shootout

LONDON, England - Italy beat England in a penalty shootout to win the European soccer championship on Sunday, sparking jubilation in Rome and despair in London.

The match at Wembley Stadium ended 1-1 after extra time, with Luke Shaw giving England an early lead and Leonardo Bonucci equalizing for Italy in the second half.

In the shootout, Italy converted all five of its penalties while England missed three, with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all failing to score.

The victory was Italy's second European Championship title, and its first since 1968.

For England, it was a heartbreaking end to a tournament in which they had been among the favorites.

The Three Lions had not reached a major final since 1966, when they won the World Cup on home soil.

Many congratulations to Italy and huge commiserations to England who follow up semi-final..
